New deal to keep world champs at Steel City’s iconic Crucible Theatre until 2045
BARRY HEARN admitted he would have “hated himself” if the World Snooker Championship left the Crucible after a new deal to keep the tournament at the Sheffield arena until at least 2045 was agreed.
The Crucible will undergo a £45million revamp and snooker's flagship event will now remain in the Steel City until at least 2045, with the option to extend for a further five years.
The Crucible’s existing contract with the World Snooker Tour (WST) was due to expire after the 2027 tournament.
It will continue to be staged at the Crucible in its current format until after the 2028 tournament, when it will temporarily move out for at least one year during the renovation.
Once complete, the venue will have an extra 500 seats, taking the capacity to just under 1,500.
