Stephen says continuing traditional skill is vital to keep theatre alive

- ELIZABETH HUNTER

ONE of the UK's last remaining marionette puppet makers says the craft is vital to keep theatre alive.

Stephen Foster, 47, is one of as few as six people making the puppets in Britain, with the art officially recognised as endangered. He made his first one at woodworking in high school after spotting a pattern for a marionette - a traditional puppet made from wood and string - in an old book.

Stephen, of East Kilbride, studied theatre in college where he focused on puppetry and a mentor taught him the craft.

He has since had various jobs - often in the theatre - but has maintained a side job as a puppet maker.

But the trade is at risk, with charity Heritage Crafts suggesting there are only six to 20 people in the UK working full-time or part-time in the trade.
