Sapsford reveals how former Dens star sold him on move to Scotland

- BY NEIL ROBERTSON

ZAC SAPSFORD admits he owes a debt of gratitude to a former Dundee player after netting his debut derby goal for United on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Australian opened the scoring for the Terrors at Dens with Ivan Dolcek hitting a second after the break to seal United's first Premiership win of the season.

Highly-rated Sapsford signed a three-year deal at Tannadice in June from Western Sydney Wanderers.

And the striker has revealed the man who oversaw a lot of his development Down Under - former Dark Blues midfielder Mark Robertson - played a big part in persuading him that moving to Scotland would help his career.

Sapsford said: “He's my mentor in football. He has helped me with the decisions I make and just guiding me. So he’ really important to me, just as much as my family is.

“When I was younger I played for his academy, Mr Soccer.

“He really helped me and must have seen something in me as a kid and believed in me.
