Goal hero was just doing what he was told!

- BY SCOTT BURNS

KIERAN TIERNEY says he was simply following orders with his Hampden stunner.

And the national hero admits he had to fight every instinct in his body to blooter instead of bend it into the corner.

The defender was instrumental in helping end a 28-year World Cup exile when he buried an injury-time strike from outside the box to send Scotland in front against Denmark for a third time.

Kenny McLean made it four with an effort from inside his own half then quipped in the moments after it Tierney had told him hed scored the third-best goal in the game despite it being a “belter”.

And the man himself admits he could have chosen no better time to change his technique to stun Celtic teammate Kasper Schmeichel after coming on as a 72nd-minute sub with the words of assistant coach Stevie Naismith ringing in his ears.

Tierney said: “Naisy actually said to me, 'Go and take us to the World Cup'.

“It’s right up there. It’s not sunk in yet but as a goal, it’s probably the most important one I've ever scored.

“I don't know if I'll ever score one as important.

"Usually I just leather the ball and that doesn't always work.

“So I said to myself to just try to place it and it fell nicely for my left foot. I just tried to hit the corner and luckily it went in.

“You know how good a goalkeeper Kasper is, so it's not easy to beat him from outside the box.
