Campaigner says £2.5m football school backed by Souness is confrontational to Catholics

- BY MARK HOWARTH

A NEW £2.5million football academy backed by Ibrox legend Graeme Souness has been branded "confrontational" to Catholics by a local campaigner in a bizarre rant.

Dr Ann Glen has urged the Scottish Government to block the sports facility because she claims its "Rangers flavour" would inflame sectarian tensions.

The pitches are part of a wider venture for new homes, public services and businesses on Green Belt land near Airdrie.

But in an email to planners, ex-community councillor Glen claimed the academy would offend Catholics and people of Irish heritage in the nearby village of Calderbank.

Last night the steam train enthusiast was accused of living in the past - while the community club that's earmarked to play there is seeking legal advice about the slur.
