PAUL LAWRIE last night demanded a fair crack at being the new Ryder Cup captain.

And the Scot raged at speculation that Thomas Bjorn will simply be swept into the role after LIV-bound Henrik Stenson's sacking.

Former Open champion Lawrie, one of the original four candidates competing for the role, spoke out at the Senior Open amid rumours former skipper Bjorn is being lined up as the Swede's replacement.

Bjorn led Europe to victory in France in 2018 but Lawrie claimed it would be unfair if he was again handed the role, not least because the Dane is a member of the five-man selection committee.

Lawrie, 53, is also adamant the replacement must come from the trio of himself, Luke Donald and Robert Karlsson.

After posting an opening 69 at the Senior Open at Gleneagles he said: "My situation has not changed.
