Brave Carl tells how he ran into inferno but is devastated he was unable to get to victim

- BY RORY CASSIDY

A HERO delivery driver has told of his anguish at being unable to save a man trapped in a blaze after smashing his way in to the burning building.

Fearless Carl Nielsen was left coughing and vomiting up black soot after kicking in the door of the ground-floor flat to try to rescue the stranger who was trapped inside.

But he was unable to get to the stricken man, who was later pronounced dead.

Shattered Carl has now been left emotionally scarred from his selfless but ultimately doomed rescue attempt at the property in Menzieshill, Dundee, on Saturday afternoon.

The 47-year-old, who works for grocery firm Snappy Shopper, noticed smoke pouring from the building while he was on a shift delivering to customers.

He then answered an SOS by neighbours who were frantically shouting and pleading for help.
