Convoy of 55 Jeeps takes vital supplies to war-torn country, as well as rescuing civilians and soldiers

ONE of the biggest aid efforts ever seen in Scotland will leave for war-torn Ukraine later this month.

- BY NORMAN SILVESTER

Fifty-five Jeeps carrying vital food and medical supplies will make the 2000-mile journey to Kolomyya and Lviv where the vehicles and contents will be handed over to authorities.

The Jeeps will then be used to deliver the supplies, evacuate civilians and retrieve wounded soldiers from the frontline.

One of the convoy leaders is Stuart McKenzie, who escaped from the capital Kyiv with his Ukranian wife Lena and two teenage sons after war broke out in February 2022. He had moved there in 1994.

The businessman is part of the Edinburgh-based Jeeps For Peace group which has delivered an estimated £10million of aid since the Russian invasion three and a half years ago.

This is potentially the most dangerous mission to date, given the recent failed peace talks and a Russian aerial attack on Kyiv last week, which killed at least 23 people.
