Politicians and sports stars backing calls for manager to get a knighthood, First Scotland boss to lead the country to three major tournaments
SCOTLAND boss Steve Clarke should be knighted for giving the Tartan Army one of their most memorable nights, according to an MSP.
A motion lodged at the Scottish Parliament by Labour's Michael Marra said the national team manager deserved the gong to “reflect the joy he has given to us all”.
Scotland booked their slot at the finals in North America next summer following a sensational 4-2 victory against Denmark on Tuesday evening.
Hampden Park was in raptures after a spectacular Kenny McLean goal from the halfway line deep into injury time sealed the three points needed for the Scots to top the qualifying group at the expense of their opponents.
Clarke, who took on the Scotland job in 2019, has now guided the national team to an impressive three of the last four major tournaments.
Marra said: “A knighthood is the least Scotland's coach deserves for uniting the country in total joy by guiding Scotland to our first World Cup in almost 30 years.
“People across the country were celebrating on Tuesday night after our incredible victory against Denmark, and being knighted would reflect the joy that Steve has given to us all.
“Scotland has a proud history of great managers who have received a knighthood, such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Matt Busby, and Sir Kenny Dalglish.
“Steve Clarke would be a worthy and welcome addition to that list.
“With three qualifications for major tournaments, our longest-serving manager is now the most successful in the national team’s history.”
