'DON'T DO THIS' WARNING ON ERYRI CUSTOM

MOUNTAIN rescuers have issued a “don't do this’ warning” over a custom being done by some walkers on the peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia).

Eryri National Park chiefs have used large marked stones for guidance to help walkers on key routes - like the paths up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon).

There has also been a tradition with some walkers to build up piles of stones, or cairns, to assist with guidance.

But there are a couple of problems with this, particularly due to the growing number, and the size, of them. Firstly this sees the removal of stones. from paths, causing further erosion and potentially affecting habitats.
