British Legion volunteers 'abused' in town for hoisting Union Jack flag

VOLUNTEERS for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal were reportedly subjected to abuse in a Welsh town over their attempts to hoist the Union Jack flag.

Karen Jones, a volunteer, told how she and her fellow volunteers faced threats and verbal abuse while distributing poppies ahead of Remembrance Day in Penarth town centre, in the Vale of Glamorgan. ‘They were told to “take the poppies and the flags down’

Ms Jones was so shocked by the incident that she later shared her experience on social media. “In a small, friendly town such as ours you do not expect Poppy Appeal volunteers to get abuse when putting up memorial lamp post poppies and flags for the remembrance period,” she said.
