AGOA trade is too important to be left to chance

THE clock is ticking for South Africa to prove it deserves continued access to the US market under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

That trade pact, renewed in 2015 and due for review, gives local exporters duty-free entry to the world’s largest economy. Billions of rand in automotive, wine and agricultural sales ride on it.

If Pretoria drifts past Washington's deadline without showing commitment to the partnership, jobs and investment will suffer.
