Discount chain's sales boost

ALDI raked in record sales of £1.65billion in the run-up to Christmas.

Takings rose 3% over the four weeks to Christmas Eve, as the discount chain notched up a best ever 57 million transactions.

It came as figures out today show shop price inflation across the board rose to 0.7% in December.

The hike from 0.6% in November was fuelled by higher food prices, trade body the British Retail Consortium said.
