Memorial unveiled in 2020 on the 50th anniversary of Cheryl's disappearance

The man accused of murdering a British toddler in Australia could finally be publicly named 56 years after the three-year-old girl went missing - a move that might lead to a conviction.

Cheryl Grimmer disappeared after being abducted from Fairy Meadow Beach, 60 miles from Sydney, in 1970.

Her family had only just moved to a dream new life Down Under from their home in Bristol.

Months later a Manchester-born man - then a teenager - confessed to her abduction and murder, but has only ever been known by the codename “Mercury”.

Tomorrow, New South Wales Legislative Council MP Jeremy Buckingham is raising a motion in parliament to have a suppression order on identifying the man lifted.
