Flags should fly for pride alone

BRITISH people should be proud of the Union Jack and the flags of the Home Nations.

When the Lionesses stormed to victory, the cross of St George was displayed with pride. Patriotism is not a dirty word. It strengthens our national identity and makes us feel proud of our country.

What is divisive is when flags are used by people with an agenda. Then it devalues the meaning of the flag. Racists have no place in our country. There is an unsavoury undercurrent here now and certain sections of society think raising a flag shows support for the likes of Nigel Farage. We cannot allow people to hijack a symbol of national pride for their own ends. We should fly the flag for genuine reasons and not let a minority make it about something else.
