ENGLAND ACES GREW TO LOVE 1996 ANTHEM
Daily Mirror UK
|June 13, 2026
IT WAS in the aftermath of the victory over Scotland that ‘Three Lions’ with its drumming chorus of "football's coming home" became the anthem of the summer.
-
By the time of the Scotland game, it had been knocked off the top of the charts and the FA had ruled it could not be played at Wembley because it was “too partisan”.
After the final whistle, that rule was ignored by the stadium DJ. The whole stadium - bar those clad in tartan - began singing along and David Baddiel, one of the song's co-writers, described it as the best day of his life.
