The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, now at the committee stage in the upper house, has had a record 1,071 amendments proposed.

Childline founder and broadcaster Dame Esther, 85, who is terminally ill with cancer, yesterday made a heartfelt plea to peers in a conversation recorded with her daughter Rebecca Wilcox, who also backs the bill.

She first of all said she understood opposition to the bill and the need to fine-tune such legislation.
