Foreign Sec calls for Nato sentry in area | Russia fleet in north 'threat to UK & Europe'

- BY LIZZY BUCHAN

ARCTIC PATROL

BRITAIN is pushing for an Arctic security pact with Nato allies to face down Russia amid tensions over Donald Trump's Greenland ownership threats.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has revealed plans to step up operation Arctic Sentry to bolster security across the High North.

The polar region of the globe includes Greenland, Iceland and Finland.

It comes as a small force of European military personnel was deployed to Greenland yesterday, sending a signal to Mr Trump over his claim he wants US control of the Danish territory.

Ms Cooper met UK and Norwegian troops at the remote Camp Viking in Overbygd, in the north of Norway, where elite Royal Marines Commandos train in the harsh conditions.

There, Brigadier Jamie Norman told her: "We are no longer at peace, and we see ourselves on a continuum that has war on one end to peace on the other. And we are somewhere on that continuum."
