No10 warned not to hit disabled with benefits axe | Cuts will 'spark poverty and push unfit into work'
LABOUR faces growing unrest over plans to slash welfare payments amid fears vulnerable people will be forced into work they are unfit for or plunged into poverty.
Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall will today outline proposals to “fairly” reduce the benefits bill in a bid to tackle the economic disaster brought to the country by 14 years of Tory rule.
But she and Keir Starmer were warned not to target the poorest in society and instead make work pay while getting the wealthy to pay their fair share of taxes.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said the government was making the “wrong choices” with plans that are expected to include tightening Personal Independence Payments, a key disability benefit.
Writing in the Mirror today, Ms Graham says: “We are pitting the poorest against the poorest.
"You can't have a situation where you're forcing people with disabilities back to work when they are unable to work."
