When that runny nose could be something more than a cold

Winter has sparked the usual unwelcome surge in viral infections, but if you are suffering from a persistent runny nose, get it checked out. Health experts have urged people to be aware of sinusitis, a condition involving swelling of the sinuses. While a cold is caused by a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract, sinusitis is caused by specific inflammation and blockage of the air-filled cavities in the face.

The majority of cases are triggered by a common cold or flu, which cause the nasal tissues to swell, trapping mucus. Other culprits include bacteria and fungi, allergies including hayfever, dry air, and irritants such as air pollution or cigarette smoke.

Symptoms including a blocked or runny nose and high temperature can be easily mistaken for other conditions. To help you spot sinusitis, experts have shared six lesser-known signs that could explain why you have been feeling "off" for weeks.

Pain or pressure around the face, particularly near the eyes, cheeks and forehead, is a major symptom, according to Superdrug pharmacy superintendent Niamh McMillan. She adds: "Many people don't realise that this discomfort can also extend to the upper teeth or ears, and this can cause confusion about the root cause of their pain."

Sinusitis causes facial pain when drainage is blocked, trapping mucus and increasing pressure in cavities of the forehead, cheeks and eyes. This congestion stimulates pain receptors, causing tenderness. Wendy Lee, professional standards and governance manager at Well Pharmacy, says a saline spray or drop can help thin out the mucus. She adds: "Using a saline drop means the smell should improve as well as better drainage around the sinuses - any saline product should be used once or twice per day to ensure best results.
