Veterans pay tribute to fallen after U-turn

WAR veterans who forced a surrender by the Government after it initially refused to pay travelling expenses paid their respects to fallen colleagues in the Netherlands yesterday.

They attended a commemoration service, leaving flowers at Grebbeberg War Cemetery near Rhenen, the final resting place of 799 military personnel and one civilian who died during action in May 1940.

The Government had originally promised to pay for their trip, but later refused. The veterans, backed by the Daily Express, branded the U-turn a "betrayal" in a move that forced a climbdown and a promise to cover all costs.
