Supermarket bosses split over Labour obesity drive

PLANS to reduce obesity by forcing supermarkets to report sales figures to the Government have been met with a mixed response from store chiefs.

Some argue the strategy will raise costs but not make a difference to public health. Others are on board with the aim to increase accountability and get chains to make products healthier.

Ministers want to set a standard for products on shelves as part of a 10-year plan for the NHS, which is struggling with an obesity crisis.

Asda chairman Allan Leighton warned ministers to “consider the cumulative regulatory burden and costs supermarkets are already bearing”.
