Snapped mast ends bid for world first

SOLO yachtswoman Pip Hare has suffered a heartbreak end to her bid to make history.

Her yacht was dismasted by brutal Southern Ocean seas, knocking her out of the Vendee Globe round-the-world race.

The 95ft spar was snapped as 60ft vessel Medallia came down from a giant wave some 800 miles south-west of Tasmania.

Pip, 50, has made a temporary rig from a piece of mast and is limping back to land.
