Mathews leads fightback to deny England a quick result

SKIPPER Ollie Pope was denied a quick first Test result by a stubborn Sri Lankan backs-to-the-wall defiance.

England were left cursing experienced Angelo Mathews (65) and Mendis (56no) as the tourists finished the third day with a lead of 82.

Kamindu The hosts are still in the box seat to lead the three-match series but they were left frustrated, having looked set for a quick finish.

Sri Lanka recovered from 10-2 after trailing by 122 runs on the first innings to finish on 204-6, with Dinesh Chandimal returning to the crease after initially having to retire hurt.

Early in the day, Jamie Smith (111) celebrated his special maiden Test century in only his fifth innings in his fourth Test as England mustered 358 all out.
