Sergeant loses case over police chief who called him 'numpty'

CALLING someone a “numpty” is not discrimination as it does not have “racial or disability connotations”, a tribunal has found.

The ruling was made in the case of a former Metropolitan Police sergeant who sued for discrimination after retiring in 2023 following 30 years with the force.

Sonny Kalar said he was offended when Chief Inspector Marlise Davies twice called him a numpty. But employment judge Richard Nicolle said Ch Insp Davies had used it as an “affectionate term”, and that it did not amount to discrimination.
