RORY MCILROY has fired back at the criticis who attacked him for his US Open meltdown.

But as he opened up on the hurt of his disaster at Pinehurst, the days of fall-out in Manhattan and his desire to make Major amends at The Open next week, he cited a career theme of recovering from painful moments.

McIlroy returns to action today at the Genesis Scottish Open for the first time since last month's collapse when he bogeyed three of his final four holes, which allowed Bryson DeChambeau to snatch the title.
