'Final nail in coffin' for Starmer as Scottish Labour leader urges him to quit

RESIGN NOW! PM ON BRINK AS CALLS TO GOO MOUNT

SIR Keir Starmer had to plead for his future as Labour's Scottish chief joined demands for the Prime Minister to go.

Anas Sarwar put the "nail in the coffin" as No10 communications chief Tim Allan quit, a day after chief of staff Morgan McSweeney.

The PM insisted he would fight on “as long as I have breath in my body” as he faced down a meeting of mutinous Labour backbenchers last night.

Earlier Mr Sarwar, Labour's leader in Scotland since 2021, had warned: “The leadership in Downing Street has to change.”

Shadow Scottish Secretary Andrew Bowie said: “Anas Sarwar has just put one of the final nails in Starmer’s political coffin. The Prime Minister’s credibility is shot.”

Mr Sarwar’s dramatic statement came hours after Sir Keir was rocked by the resignation of his Downing Street communications chief Tim Allan.

The PM’s chief of staff Morgan McSweeney had quit on Sunday over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the US despite his continued links with Jeffrey Epstein after the financier’s conviction for child sex offences.

Adding to a day of high drama, Health Secretary Wes Streeting accused No10 of briefing against him again by suggesting he had encouraged Mr Sarwar’s outburst.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch urged Sir Keir to end the chaos of his leadership.

imageShe said: “It’s quite clear that Keir Starmer does not have a grip on his government. He is in office, but not in power, and our country is not being governed.

“The Labour Party have a huge majority, but can’t run anything.

“They need to decide who is the best person to lead their party so that they can fix the problems of this country.

“What I'm seeing is a government that is completely adrift.
