When Rafa Nadal yesterday bowed to what had seemed inevitable for more than two years, there was no shortage of plaudits for a career that spanned 23 years and rewarded him with 22 Grand Slam singles titles and two Olympic golds.

His career is over and once he serves a last stint for Spain on home soil in next month's Davis Cup finals an event he has helped his country win on four occasions one of the game's greats will finally bow out.
