Tory leader Kemi Badenoch says Trump 'is dead right' over our Chagos surrender
KEMI Badenoch said Sir Keir Starmer is "out of his depth" on the world stage after Donald Trump humiliated the PM over his surrender of the Chagos Islands.
The Tory leader said the US president was "dead right" to accuse him of "great stupidity" for handing the Indian Ocean site to Mauritius.
Writing in today's Express, she says: "His Labour government are completely out of their depth in the new international order." Mrs Badenoch also warned that the Prime Minister has risked UK security by giving the go-ahead to China's mega-embassy in London.
She claimed that Labour "are weak in a world that increasingly cares only about strength", adding: "Keir Starmer's decision is not just an act of stupidity...but also an act of complete self-sabotage."
Mr Trump lost patience with Sir Keir over his resistance to US attempts to seize Greenland, and unleashed a social media onslaught which left the US-UK "special relationship" hanging by a thread.
The PM risked provoking the president further by approving Beijing's new mission building.
The government signed off plans for the site at Royal Mint Court next to the Tower of London despite furious opposition from MPs and amid warnings that the HQ will be used as a "spy hub".
Critics accused Sir Keir, expected to visit China this month, of lacking "backbone" and of "kowtowing" to the communist superpower.
Documents released alongside the decision showed MI5 warned that it is "not realistic to expect to be able wholly to eliminate each and every potential risk". The controversial move was announced shortly after Mr Trump had condemned Sir Keir for "giving away" the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, a country seen as an ally of China.
