Pioneer revolutionised surgery

SIR Terence English will be remembered as the surgeon who carried out the very first successful heart transplant in'the UK.

At the time he had to fight for the right to carry out the surgery, at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge in 1979, after resistance from both the public and the government. But the operation on Keith Castle, 52, who lived for more than five years afterwards, was a success and paved the way to future transplants.

Born in South Africa, his father Arthur died from silicosis when Terence was two, leaving his mother Mavis to bring him and his older sister Mary up alone.
