Nine years for mum who killed her autistic son

A MOTHER who smothered her autistic son then tried to kill herself after struggling to cope has been jailed for a minimum nine years for murder.

Claire Button killed five-year-old Lincoln and left a note that read: "He does not fit in the world and where he doesn't fit I don't either", a trial at Basildon Crown Court had heard.

Button, 36, of South Ockendon, Essex, who had had problems with her mental health and tried to seek help, was found guilty of murder by a jury after she had admitted manslaughter.

Judge Samantha Leigh yesterday jailed her for life - she must serve nine years before she can be considered for release. Button, described in court as a "loving, caring mother", wiped tears from her eyes during the hearing.
