Morrisons raises cost-saving target to £1bn as sales climb

MORRISONS has announced a rise in sales amid a wide-ranging store shake-up plan which will lead to hundreds of job losses.

Group like-for-like sales rose 2.1% in the 13 weeks ending January 26 while total sales increased by 2.4% to £4billion over the same period. The Bradford-based supermarket chain said it had made £56million of cost savings in the first quarter, taking the total to £668m since the start of the programme.

It has also raised its cost-saving target from £700m to £1bn.
