JESSE Jackson was at a civil rights protest in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968, with Martin Luther King Jr, when MLK was assassinated.

Jackson said he cradled King's head as he died at the Lorraine Motel and controversially appeared on TV with his clothes still stained with King's blood as he assumed the mantle of civil rights leadership.

Jackson had been a protégé of King's, and devoted his life to politically organising and improving the lives of African-Americans alongside working as an ordained and extremely eloquent Baptist minister.

In 1965 he participated in the Selma to Montgomery marches in Alabama and King was so impressed by Jackson's drive he gave him more responsibility within the movement.
