Lowry out to paint town Claret again after 2019 victory

IF ANYONE is in doubt over who lifted the Claret Jug here last time out, then the approach to Royal Portrush is sure to remind them.

A mural of Shane Lowry adorns the side of one house on Causeway Street as Northern Ireland hosts The Open at the course where the Offaly man won the title in 2019.

The gable end of the property shows Lowry’s face and the famous trophy - but the man himself is glad his route to the course takes a different road.

Grinning, he said: “I’m happy I have to drive the other way. I don’t have to drive past it every day.”

Lowry’s victory in 2019 was a special moment at a course he will have played so often during his rise.
