CALLED the most powerful vice president in American history, politician and businessman Dick Cheney served as the 46th vice-president of the United States from 2001 to 2009 under President George W Bush.

He had previously served as White House Chief of Staff for President Gerald Ford, the US representative for Wyoming's congressional district from 1979 to 1989 and as 17th United States secretary of defense.

Cheney was a key architect of the Iraq War and Bush's “War On Terror” after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 but in his final years became a bitter critic of the Republican Party under President Donald Trump.

"In our nation's 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic," he said of Trump.

Richard Cheney was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. His father worked for the US Department of Agriculture and aged 13, the family moved to Wyoming.
