'In detention'...arrivals set for 'one-in, one-out' return

In footage released by the Home Office yesterday - a day after the arrangement came into force - the all-male group were escorted up a gangway at Dover.

They were then taken to the migrant processing centre in Manston, Kent, for screening and security checks. Yesterday Sir Keir Starmer hailed the agreement, saying: "We have detained the first illegal migrants under our new deal before returning them to France. No gimmicks, just results. If you break the law to enter this country, you will face being sent back.

"When I say I will stop at nothing to secure our borders, I mean it." Home Secretary Yvette Cooper insisted the Government would defend itself against any legal challenges brought by the migrants being sent back.
