'I was hit by a wave of grief over Alex's death'

NICOLA Sturgeon has admitted that she was hit by a “wave of grief” after the death of mentor turned-rival Alex Salmond.

Her predecessor as First Minister of Scotland died suddenly aged 69 last October and the former SNP leader said she still misses him.

The pair’s friendship broke down after sexual misconduct allegations against him — he was later cleared and set up the political party Alba.

Ms Sturgeon told ITV News last night: “Even today I still miss him in some way, the person that I used to know and the relationship we used to have.

“But I thought I had made my peace with it, that I'd got to a point where I felt nothing. And then I got a call to tell me that Alex Salmond had died.
