Flood chaos as month's rain falls over 24 hours

BRITAIN battled devastating flooding and travel chaos yesterday after a month's rain fell in just 24 hours - and more deluges are on the way.

Intense showers saw swollen rivers burst their banks again and more than 64 flood warnings and 258 alerts were put in place yesterday for England.

More than 10 alerts, meaning flooding is possible, were in force for Wales.

Residents near Peterborough were left struggling after the road separating the villages of Whittlesey and Thorney was left underwater.

Elsewhere, the river Sheppey burst its bank at Croscombe in Somerset, flooding homes and businesses while causing widespread disruption.

Between 3pm Saturday and 8am Sunday, there was 2.8 inches of rainfall in White Barrow, Devon, 2 inches in Priddy, Somerset, and 1.8 inches in Croeserw, South Wales. Flood water is expected to continue to cause severe delays to national bus and train services while motorists are expected to face longer journey times.
