Farewell to our D-Day heroes

THE deaths of two D-Day heroes who each played a crucial role in the 1944 invasion of Normandy were announced yesterday.
RAF gunner Sydney Podd, who died aged 102, served in a fleet of Halifax bombers towing Horsa gliders during the opening exchanges of the Second World War allied assault.
Doug Baldwin, who died at 100, served as a Bren gunner with the 6th Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and survived detention in Nazi prisoner of war camps.
