Dismay at fishing lake ‘left to decay’ after anglers ban

A LAKE has fallen into neglect after a council turfed out anglers to turn it into a biodiversity hub.

In June, local club members lost their licence to fish in Wingerworth Lido, near Chesterfield.

North East Derbyshire District Council said at the time it was part of plans to boost wildlife and it wanted to set up a friends group.

It said it had residents’ backing and that of nature bodies like the Derbyshire Amphibian & Reptile Group and Wingerworth Wildlife.

But local campaigners say the site has been left to decay. Pictures seen by the Express show dead fish on the banks and floating on the former swimming facility.
