'BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS' - Police accused of 'missed' chances to stop triple killer

A POLICE chief was accused of having "blood on his hands" as bereaved relatives claimed that triple killer Valdo Calocane had "got away with murder" yesterday.

Calocane stabbed to death students Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both 19, and grandad Ian Coates, 65, after a series of failures left the paranoid schizophrenic roaming free.

His victims' families said that they were not consulted before Calocane, 32 - who has been locked up since his Nottingham rampage on June 13 last year - was allowed to dodge a murder trial by pleading guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

Last night it was revealed Attorney General Victoria Prentis will review Calocane's sentence after receiving a complaint that it was unduly lenient.

She may refer the case to Court of Appeal judges who would decide whether the term is appropriate.

Inquiry

The families have called for a full inquiry, claiming police failed to carry out even basic tests on the arrested killer to see if he was under the influence of drink or drugs. There are believed to have been many missed chances to take him off the streets.

After Calcone was given an indefinite hospital order at the city's Crown Court, Barnaby's distraught mother Emma Webber tore into a senior Nottinghamshire police chief.

She said: "To the Assistant Chief Constable Rob Griffin, who finally released this information publicly yesterday, I say this: You have blood on your hands.

"If you had just done your jobs properly, there's a very good chance my beautiful boy would be alive today.

"There is so much more to say and, clearly, serious regarding this case and questions events leading up to this monster being out in society.
