After 56 years, man who confessed may finally be named

THE man accused of murdering a British toddler in Australia could finally be publicly named 56 years after the three-year-old girl went missing — a move that might lead to a conviction.

Cheryl Grimmer disappeared after being abducted from Fairy Meadow Beach, 60 miles from Sydney, in 1970.

Her family had only just moved to a dream new life Down Under from their home in Bristol.

Months later a Manchester-born man — then a teenager — confessed to her abduction and murder, but has only ever been known by the codename “Mercury”.

Tomorrow, New South Wales Legislative Council MP Jeremy Buckingham is raising a motion in parliament to have a suppression order on identifying the man lifted.

He said: “We want the name published as well as his photos, there is no reason for the public not know who he is. The evidence against him is unassailable and he should be charged and convicted.
