AI camera trial nabs 3,200 drivers on phone or without a seat belt

SOME 3,205 motorists have been caught using their mobile phones at the wheel or not wearing seatbelts in just five weeks, thanks to artificial intelligence cameras.

But despite the images captured by the Heads Up system trial, no one has been prosecuted.

The state-of-the-art system, developed by Acusensus, recorded 812 drivers using mobile phones on video or voice calls, and 2,393 incidents of seatbelt non-compliance by drivers or passengers across the Greater Manchester area.

The trial has been praised by Sarah Storey, 47 Britain's most decorated Paralympian with 30 medals, including 19 golds.
