2,000 violent incidents a day against shop staff

VIOLENCE against shop staff has soared to a record high of 2,000 incidents daily - and attacks using weapons have doubled.

An annual crime survey found that cases of violence and abuse in the past 12 months had soared from 1,300 a day noted in the previous year.

The figure of 2,000 is more than four times the toll recorded in 2020, of 455 incidents a day.

Cases include racial and sexual abuse, physical assault and threats and weapons are used on store staff 70 times every day.

Yet despite the rocketing number of offences, police are failing to tackle the crisis with victims' satisfaction levels plunging 61% called the reaction "poor" or "very poor".
