Leading councillor welcomes Cov's green pothole rating
Coventry Telegraph
|January 16, 2026
A LEADING Coventry councillor has welcomed the announcement the local authority has been awarded a green rating for its approach to tackling potholes.
But the leader of the opposition believes some residents will be surprised at the news due to how much the city council spends on repairs.
The ratings, announced by the Department for Transport (DfT), range from green (highest) through amber to red (lowest).
They measure how well each local highway authority is maintaining its roads based on three areas - the condition of local roads, how much is being spent on maintenance, and how effectively each council follows best practice in highways maintenance. The last category includes how technology is used to fix and prevent potholes more efficiently.
Coventry City Council’s overall green status followed top ratings for the overall condition of its roads and the spend, and an amber award for best practice. Just 16 local authorities were ranked ‘green’ with 125 rated ‘amber’ and 13 ‘red’ Those in the bottom category will be given dedicated support from the experts.
