Submit himself for the upcoming by election (fence cleared).

Be picked as the Labour candidate for the upcoming by-election (fell).

Win that by-election.

Force Keir Starmer out as Labour leader, or Starmer resigns, etc (after the May elections).

Get enough nominations to stand as the new Labour leader.

Become that new leader by beating the other candidates - and therefore be PM.

So rather than being like Red Rum at Aintree in Liverpool, he was more like Devon Loch in that famous steeplechase horse race.
