UJ hosts screening of '8 Days' to raise awareness about human trafficking

THE University of Johannesburg (UJ), in collaboration with Awareness for Child Trafficking (ACT), Africa and partners recently hosted a powerful screening of '8 Days', to raise awareness. It exposes the alarming realities of human trafficking.

The screening and discussion that followed aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of human trafficking and spark meaningful discussions on how to combat this global crisis.

UJ Registrar, Prof Bettine Van Vuuren said: This is more than a movie but a call to action; a chance to reflect and an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the issues that affect countless lives worldwide including South Africa.

Hilary Leong, Chairperson and CEO of ACT Africa reflected on the film explaining to the audience that the story was based on real life events that happened in South Africa.

Booyens produced the movie to share the events that happened to his own sister.

After sneaking to a party with her friends, 8 Days tells the story of 16-year-old Amber Stevens who goes missing. Forced into the world to sex trafficking, her family and community fight to get her back.
