Remembering a WWII hero’s role in the fight for freedom and peace
Cape Argus
|February 03, 2026
ON November 9, a solemn ceremony dedicated to Remembrance Day was held in Cape Town - a day when many countries around the world honour the memory of those who fell in the line of duty, in particular during the First and Second World Wars.
-
Among other representatives of the diplomatic corps I had a privilege to attend the event at the invitation of the Cape Town City Hall.
Bearing in mind the significance of Remembrance Day, I thought it would be of particular significance on November 11 - the actual date when Remembrance Day is observed, to pay a visit to the Capetonian whose life is a living page of 20th century history.
