A monumental quest: Stonehenge's creation

SET in 2500BC, Circle of Days is a fictional account of the building of Stonehenge.

Combining imagination, historical research and archaeological evidence, Follett paints a picture of the lives of Neolithic peoples - herders, farmers and hunter-gatherers, and early craftsmen and traders.

These peoples gather regularly for seasonal rites at the equinoxes. At the centre of these rites is a circle of wooden arches, used by the priestesses from the herder community to calculate the passage of time through the movement of the sun.

The ritual performances are a highlight of the year and draw people to the area to mingle and trade for livestock, food, tools and other necessities.
