Military families will finally be able to access decent accommodation
Cambridge News
|August 23, 2025
THE world recently marked VJ Day 80 and I, like many of you, have been reflecting on the Allied Victory in World War II and the countless sacrifices made by our servicemen and women at home and abroad to ensure the freedoms that we still enjoy.
-
It’s a good opportunity to reflect on the turning point that moment represented for our shared history.
As the Prime Minister commented at his Downing Street reflection, there was a national feeling of victory and relief, but also the sense that the world was motivated to move forward and achieve peace after so much bloodshed.
There have been remembrance events locally, and former City Council Leader Lewis Herbert has written movingly about those from the City who suffered so grievously in the war in the Far East.
We all know the huge sacrifices that our armed forces make to keep us safe.
You may not know, however, that for too long, military families have lived in substandard homes.
I’m sure you'll agree with me that this treatment doesn’t match the invaluable contributions they make in defending our country today.
Labour has long recognised this problem - military morale reached record lows under the last Conservative government.
